Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Repair and Overhaul Technician (CAMC)

Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Repair/Overhaul Technicians are employed to: repair and overhaul of gas turbine engines; rebuilding gas turbine engines; balancing components and assemblies; testing and troubleshooting gas turbine engines and; inspecting gas turbine engine components and assemblies. In some companies, the job of the gas turbine engine repair and overhaul technician is broken down into three roles, namely: inspection, disassembly/assembly and testing. The scope of the analysis, therefore, may be divided into multi-level skills depending upon company policies which would result in graduates being required to perform only a portion of the tasks listed in the analysis, while in other instances they would perform all of them. This occupation occurs primarily in power plant shops of larger airlines, independent repair and overhaul shops and the repair and overhaul shops of engine manufacturers. Gas turbine technicians perform the disassembly, inspection, repair, assembly and testing of gas turbine engines in a clean shop environment with regular working hours. This aircraft engine specialist is required to troubleshoot problems and inspect gas turbine engine components and assemblies.

This can include tearing down and rebuilding engines, balancing of components in these sophisticated, modern engines. Gas turbine engines are used in jet aircraft and power turbo-prop aircraft. Engine overhaul takes place in specialized shops where engines are taken apart, problems diagnosed, the engine components are cleaned, repaired or rebuilt. The engine is then put back together and tested. Tolerances and performance parameters for aircraft gas turbine engines are very high and require skilled technicians who have a strong mechanical aptitude. This job requires workers to be able to interpret technical manuals and drawings. Engine repair facilities have installed materials management data bases, and keyboarding skills are becoming more important.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Repair And Overhaul Technician can expect work primarily in power plant shops of larger airlines, independent repair and overhaul shops and the repair and overhaul shops of engine manufacturers.

ACRO Aerospace - Aircraft Gas Turbine Technician

The 'Gas Turbine Technician' program teaches helicopter engine repair and maintenance. It is a 10-month course developed by ACRO and consisting of three months of classroom study and seven months of hands-on training. Sixteen trainees are currently enrolled in the 2001 program.

The Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Council's Gas Turbine Repair and Overhaul Apprenticeship Program's curriculum has endeavored to instill team spirit, pride, hard work, dedication, honesty and ethics as well as a sense of fun into the students. All of this on top of a basic grounding in gas turbine engine theory and a good practical understanding.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

The training is conducted at our Richmond facility and normal class times are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Each class consists of sixteen students. Enrollment standards include high school graduation or equivalent, and successful completion of an entrance examination and interview.

ACRO Aerospace will pay for the tuition fees for this program. However, ACRO Aerospace will not be providing any remuneration to students during the length of this training program. ACRO Aerospace will also not provide any form of financial assistance to any student enrolled in this program. It is the full responsibility of each individual student to cover any additional costs associated with the program.

PROGRAM LENGTH

The program term is thirty-eight weeks in length and includes theoretical and hands on training, including on the job training (OJT) where the students work on the shop floor along side a technician.


BCIT - Aircraft Gas Turbine Technician

The Gas Turbine Technician program is conducted at BCIT's Aerospace and Technology campus at the Vancouver International Airport. This program is a hands-on trades training program consisting of 40 per cent theory and 60 per cent practical. Students have access to a wide variety of gas turbine engines, extensive engine tooling and qualified instructors. Along with theory studies, students perform tasks ranging from the use of basic hand tools to complete disassembly, inspection and assembly of gas turbine engines. Intricate assembly procedures and extensive use of technical manuals require good manual dexterity and strong reading comprehension skills for successful completion of this program.

This program is a hands-on trades training program consisting of 40 per cent theory and 60 per cent practical.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Completion of a recognized structured training program in gas turbine repair and overhaul. Courses may be taken at a community college, or through a company-sponsored program.

Other required skills:

mechanical aptitude, able to interpret technical manuals and drawings, keyboarding
High school graduation
English 12 or Communications 12
Any Math course at the Grade 11 level (Accounting 11 is not acceptable)
English language proficiency

PROGRAM LENGTH

Full-time, 38 weeks
