Aircraft Painter (ITAC)

An Aircraft Painter is the person who prepares, primes and paints aircraft exteriors. They are required to mix, blend and match paints. They must be able to perform detail work, for corporate logos and branding of aircraft, as well as perfectly finished field work.

Aircraft Painters must thoroughly understand and follow all safety regulations - their work includes the use of hazardous chemicals and potentially dangerous industrial spray paint equipment.

WHAT CERTIFICATIONS ARE REQUIRED?

Diploma: None

Apprenticeship: Completion of a 2 year program including 3,480 workplace hours and 120 in-school hours of training. After completion of training, a passing grade on exams will result in the BC Certificate of Apprenticeship. The apprentice is now considered a qualified, highly skilled journeyman. Completion of an Entry Level Training Program at an ITAC recognized educational institution might confer credit towards some of the required technical training.
Apprenticeship options also available through the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council (CAMC)

Licensing: Certification from ITAC.

Recurrent Training: As required by the company.

WHAT ARE THE CORE COMPETENCIES OF THE POSITION?

The following core competencies are required:

  • Grade 12 Completion is preferred (required for post-secondary training)
  • Grade 10 Completion or equivalent including:
    • English 10
    • Math 10
    • Science 10
  • Strong digital electronics skills and systems knowledge
  • Keyboarding
  • Problem solving
  • Good physical condition since heavy lifting and climbing may be required
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • Must not be afraid of heights as they may work on the top of jet wings and fuselages Fluent
  • written and verbal English is mandatory
WHAT TYPE OF WORK EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED BEYOND CERTIFICATION?

None.

WHAT ARE THE WAGES?

Apprentice: $14.00 - $24.00 per hour
Journeyman: $20.00 $31.00 per hour $28,000.00 per year
Note: Aircraft Painters employed by unionized shops with collective bargaining agreements will work with more structured wage scales.

WHAT ARE THE WORKING CONDITIONS?

Aircraft Painters can expect to work on the aircraft in the hangar. Adverse conditions may include noise, odours, and danger.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

Aircraft Painters are predominately employed by major airlines and large repair and overhaul organizations.
