Aircraft Structure Technician - Unlicensed (CAMC)
The Aircraft Structure Technician is the 'body shop' repair worker for aircraft. This trade requires a significant skill and knowledge level since the technician is dealing with the body and structure of an aircraft that will have significant impact on the flying characteristics of the aircraft. These technicians are required to assess corrosion and fatigue damage to an aircraft, and be able to manufacture, modify and repair sheet metal and composite parts, structures, skins and panels to exacting tolerances. Greater use of ceramics and composite materials in aircraft and aircraft engines, require specialized skills. The job requires a high degree of training and skill in all materials and fasteners used in aircraft structures. Theoretical knowledge of aircraft structures, the physics of flight, and performance characteristics of metals and components is needed.
Experienced technicians in this trade may qualify for a Transport Canada 'S' category license to inspect and certify.

Diploma: See education below
Apprenticeship: A minimum of 3 years experience in the trade.
Technicians holding an S31, S32, or S33 license are exempt from completing a logbook but must send a copy of their current license with their application.
Technicians wishing to register for composite repair will have to complete specific tasks in the logbook unless they hold an S34 license.
Apprenticeship options also available through the Industry Trade and Apprenticeship Commission (ITAC).
Licensing: Certification from CAMC

An Aircraft Structure Technician - Unlicensed must expect a requirement for 4 years of on-the-job training to progress in the trade.

| WHAT ARE THE WAGES? |
|
Apprentice: $14.00 - $20.00 per hour
Journeyman: $21.00 - $29.00 per hour

| WHAT ARE THE WORKING CONDITIONS? |
Aircraft Structure Technicians - Unlicensed duties overlap with the services performed by other specialty mechanics and technicians. This is particularly true of the tasks, which relate to specialized work practices. Aircraft Structure Technicians - Unlicensed can expect to work on the aircraft in the hangar and on the flight line. Adverse conditions may include weather extremes, noise, odours, and danger.

| WHERE ARE THE JOBS? |
Aircraft Structure Technicians - Unlicensed are predominately employed by major airlines and large repair, overhaul organizations and specialty repair shops. These will generally be located around major airports. |
BCIT - Aircraft Structures Technician |
|
The program is one term of the AME-S program and has the same approval. Students will attend lectures approximately 50 per cent of the time, while gaining hand-on experience 50 per cent of the time.

| ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS |
Entrance Requirements:
- High school Graduation
- English 12 or Communications 12
- Academic Math 11 or Introduction to Math 11 or Math 11A or Aviation Trade Math
- English language proficiency
- BCIT pretest is acceptable for English and Math.
- Some drafting is recommended.
Note: Mature students may be given special consideration, subject to an interview and testing by instructional staff.
Note: Applied Academics courses taught in BC high schools are acceptable as entrance requirements for BCIT programs.
Applied Academics courses can be used to meet these requirements, as follows:
- Technical and Professional Communications 12 meets English 12 requirement;
- Applications of Math 11 meets Math 11 requirement;
- Applications of Math 12 meets Math 12 requirement;
- Applications of Physics 11 AND 12 meets Physics 11 requirement;
- Information Technology 12 meets Computer Science 12 requirement.

BCIT Fresh Start
