Welcome to the Aerospace Industry Association of British Columbia (AIABC) Career Pathway Internet Database - the most comprehensive list of aerospace and aviation manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul careers in British Columbia.

Growth in the industry will result in more than 3400 vacancies in over 23 skilled occupations over the next five years. Some AIABC member companies have already adjusted their growth plans to address this predicted labour shortages.

This site has also been constructed with specific attention to how the careers fit together. For example, opportunities for advancement or lateral transfer have been highlighted where appropriate. All this has been done to make the process of selecting a career in the aerospace industry as easy as possible.

Definitions

TRANSPORT CANADA (TC)
Transport Canada (TC) is the Federal body for establishing and maintaining all regulations and standards for the Canadian aerospace industry. In the aviation maintenance industry, TC provides licensing to three (3) aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) careers. Only those academic/ training Institutions and companies that are licensed by TC can license students as AMEs. Candidates are required to graduate from acceptable basic training courses and must successfully pass a TC technical knowledge exam(s) based on the license rating being applied for. Please note individuals possessing CAMC status may receive credit towards a Transport Canada AME license - candidates are asked to contact the source educational institute or licensed company for specific information.

CANADIAN AVIATION MAINTENANCE COUNCIL (CAMC)
The Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council (CAMC) is a non-profit organization, established to operate as a Sector Council for the aviation maintenance industry in collaboration with Human Resources Development Canada. CAMC, which is made up of an equal number of employee and employer groups, has developed occupational standards for thirteen (13) aviation trades. From these occupational trade standards industry and training representatives have developed curriculums across Canada. For further information contact www.camc.ca

THE INDUSTRY TRAINING AND APPRENTICESHIP COMMISSION (ITAC)
The industry training and apprenticeship commission (ITAC) provides certification or a credential to over 150 existing and emerging trades and technical occupations. In the BC aviation maintenance industry ITAC currently certifies three (3) different careers. Pathways to certification range from six months to five years in duration. Each contains a component of formal training at high school or post-secondary institute and "hands-on" training and experience in the workplace.
ITAC certification currently does not qualify as credit towards CAMC certification or Transport Canada AME licensing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Province of British Columbia has announced that ITAC will be changed in name and focus in 2002 - prospective candidates are advised to contact AIABC directly for information and developments in this area before proceeding.
